Grandfamily Camping

Camping can strengthen intergenerational family bonds through exploration and outdoor adventures. My husband and I started looking for ways to make memories with our grandchildren and connect our two generations. It began with our Grandfamily. "Grandfamilies" or "kinship" families, in other words, are families where children are raised by grandparents or other relatives. We decided to focus on camping as a way of connecting with our grandchildren while reconnecting with nature. There are some fun ways to connect nostalgia with the present during your camping experience.

One of the most looked forward to times when camping is cooking over an evening campfire. Cooking hotdogs over an open fire or roasting marshmallows is a perfect time to tell stories and engage in conversations about the past as well as the future. This can also give kids a feeling of independence and pride when cooking their food with adults standing by to supervise. Adding s'mores to your list of fun camp cooking can bring back memories and create new ones too.

Planning fun activities for everyone to enjoy will help bring unexpected adventures to your camping trip. Campground bingo is a fun activity that will keep everyone engaged and having fun together. In addition, geocaching is an activity that our entire family enjoys. This is similar to a scavenger hunt but can be done on a much larger scale. To learn more about geocaching here is a book on Amazon * https://amzn.to/4fZQokd with a solid rating explaining the fundamentals of this family activity.

Hiking and nature walks are great ways to bring out the natural wonder and curiosity of the grandchildren. It also offers an opportunity for us as grandparents to share the knowledge and wisdom we have gained in the different seasons of our own lives. These walks help everyone stay healthier, provide an escape from everyday stress, and give the children a sense of independence and confidence.

Grandfamily camping trips are a special way to make family bonds stronger. They provide a wonderful time for grandchildren and grandparents to create memories that will last forever. These trips help everyone appreciate nature more and love the time their grandfamily spends together.
